National heritage does not only include tangible and fixed heritage such as Seokguram Grotto or Sungnyemun Gate. Traditional performing arts and skills that are not material in form but embody the spirit and aesthetics of Korean culture—including songs, dances, dramas, rituals, and traditional craft skills—are also recognized and protected as intangible heritage.
If an element of intangible heritage has significant historical, academic, or artistic value and requires safeguarding for transmission to future generations, it may be designated by the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service as a National Intangible Heritage.
