“International Conference New Research Trends and Perspective

of Inscriptions on Artistic Heritage” to Be Held

- Presentations and Discussions on Data Compilation, Research Status, and Utilization of Inscriptions (July 10, National Palace Museum of Korea, Seoul)

In collaboration with the Association of Asian Art History (President: Kim Yunjeong), the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (General Director: Lim Jongdeock; hereafter, the NRICH) an affiliate of the Korea Heritage Service, will co-host an international academic conference titled “International Conference New Research Trends and Perspective of Inscriptions on Artistic Heritage” on July 10 at 1:00 PM in the main auditorium of the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul.

The NRICH has been compiling an extensive archive of data on inscriptions found on cultural heritage such as stone steles, roof tiles, and earthenware. The data includes basic information, decipherments, interpretations, and high-resolution photographs. The NRICH has been focusing since 2020 on creating a comprehensive database on stone steles found nationwide, currently providing approximately 6,380 entries via the NRICH Research Portal. Beginning this year, the NRICH has initiated a full-scale data compilation project on ceramics and metal crafts from the Goryeo and Joseon periods. This international conference is designed to explore the current state of research and data construction related to inscriptions on ceramics and metalwork from both Korea and abroad. It will also seek to identify future research directions and best practices for data utilization and development.

The event will consist of two parts—Session I: Data Construction and Utilization and Session II: Current Research Status and Future Directions—with a total of six presentations. Session I will feature three presentations focused on inscriptions on ceramics, examining the current status of domestic and international research on inscriptions and the compilation of related materials as well as case studies on database construction and utilization. These three presentations are “Compilation and Construction of Inscription Data on Ceramics and Metal Crafts” (Lee Myoungok, NRICH), “Database Construction and Utilization of Inscribed Earthenware in Japan, and Compilation of Inscribed Ceramics” (HisakoIshiguro, Research Institute for Japanese Ancient Studies, Meiji University), and “Study Trends and Utilization Significance of Joseon-era Inscribed White Porcelain from Urban Consumption Sites: Items Recovered from Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall” (Park Jungmin, Myongji University).

Session II will include three presentations: “Research on Inscriptions on Goryeo-era Metal Crafts and Future Directions” (Lee Yongjin, Dongguk University),“Current Research and Compilation of Inscriptions on Qing Imperial Bronzeware” (Chang Li, National Palace Museum), and “Research on Inscriptions on Joseon-era Metal Crafts and Future Directions” (Choi Gukhee, Duksung Women’s University). These presentations will explore the current state of research and of the compilation of inscription data on metal crafts from both Korea and abroad. They will also discuss potential future directions for study.

A comprehensive panel discussion chaired by Professor Bang Byungsun (Korea University) will follow the presentations. The panel will include experts in ceramics and metal crafts such as Kim Eunkyoung (Korea University), Sagong Youngae (Korea Heritage Service), and Ryu Jinhyun(Horim Museum), along with the presenters.

The conference is open to the public.On-site registration will be available on the day of the event. For more details, please visit the website of the NRICH (https://www.nrich.go.kr) or call 042-860-9193.

The NRICH aims to apply this conference as an opportunity to reaffirm the significance of inscriptions preserved in art heritage and promote continued in-depth research and the systematic construction of comprehensive databases.
