Zelkova tree is distributed in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. Since it grows fast, the tree plays an important role as an arbor tree. According to feng shui, it was used to protect against the wind. The whole area of Seongeup-ri near the southeastern coast of Jejudo Island is designated as Important Folklore Material No. 188. One Saw-leaf Zelkova tree and seven Japanese Hackberries grow together. The zelkova tree is about 1,000 years old, with height of 20.5m and girth of 4.3m. The 7 Hackberries have height of 14.5~23.5m and girth of 2.36~5m. They form the forest with other trees and the tree has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. According to records, they grew under the rule of King Chungnyeol in the Goryeo dynasty. It appears that some of the trees continue to grow. The Saw-leaf Zelkovas and Japanese Hackberries in Seongeup-ri have grown under the care and attention of our ancestors, and they are highly valued ethnically and biologically. Therefore, they are designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
